The Ultimate Guide to Hiking Acatenango Volcano with a 4x4 Car

If you’re an off-roader planning to hike Acatenango, you might be considering doing it yourself. To access the trail, you'll need a permit from Finca San Sebastián (more info at their website). The cost is approximately $200 USD per car. Keep in mind, if your vehicle gets stuck, there's a $520 USD rescue fee.

The Path

The road to Acatenango isn’t overly technical but has a steep section where you'll need to engage low gear. If it rained the day before, it could be slippery, so rescue recovery boards are highly recommended during the rainy season. Other than that, it’s a normal dirt road.

Hiring a Guide

Even though you’re driving, you’ll need a guide. From where you park, it’s about an hour's hike to the volcano's camp areas. After paying the entrance fee, your guide will take you to their basecamp, where you’ll find various setups, from tents with camping beds to basic sleeping bags.

Overnight Experience and Summit Hike

Most guides offer food as part of their service, usually dinner and breakfast, but since you’re driving, you can also bring your own supplies. The next morning, you’ll begin the final ascent to Acatenango’s summit with your guide to watch the sunrise, a highlight of the adventure.

Hiking Acatenango by 4x4 offers off-roaders a unique blend of convenience and adventure. Just be prepared for the potential challenges, especially during the rainy season, and make sure you plan accordingly!
